With the recent loss of our beloved Professor Reza Sarhangi, we also mourn another outstanding figure, architect Fabien Vienne, co-designer of the Zometool ‘Green struts’ and no doubt the main contributor of recent years’ ‘Big builds’. The Penticosido Zometool piece is a modest tribute to Fabiens’s luminous 70-year design career, crowned by a recent retrospective exhibition at the Chaillot Palace in Paris.

See the world’s first pancake printer making edible pancake art. The computer controlled PancakeBot will be used to make pancakes in the shape of lizards, turtles, elephants, and other creatures in the style of M.C. Escher. These pancakes will tessellate!  And  better yet you can eat them! 

pancakeTurtlesThe inventor of the PancakeBot, Miguel Valenzuela, will be there to demonstrate the world’s first pancake printer and answer questions about the invention processes.  Kevin Lee, the author of TesselManiac, will also be there to explain the math of tessellations and how he adapted his tessellation program to create PancakeBot files.

La Figure de la Terre is a short film based on the book The Figure of the Earth by Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis. In 1736 Maupertuis led a scientific expedition to the Tornio valley with the objective of establishing the precise shape of the Earth. Dr. Osmo Pekonen, the foremost authority on the expedition stars in the role of Maupertuis. Anders Celsius is played by Dr. Johan Stén, also a researcher of the history of science in the 1700s.

Today’s digital photography produces pictures that are basically arrays of numbers. The three themes of this workshop are (1) Revealing the numbers describing the red, green and blue color channels in a photo taken with a smartphone; (2) Applying basic image enhancement techniques using simple math; (3) Learning about masking objects in a photo using “image inpainting.” Maximum number of participants: 24.

Turja-pendulum photoPendulum painting bases on pendulum movement as a bottle of paint hanging upside down is pushed to swing. The paint running down creates interesting forms on a large sheet of paper or fabric beneath the pendulum. The activity is placed on the backyard of Agora, to which you can get through the lobby. Note that if it is raining, the workshop will be held under the roof next to the main entrance.
